The Joint National Committee on Hypertension V (JNC V) (1) has estimated the prevalence and incidence of hypertension to be between 15 and 30% in the Continental United States. Limited data is published about medical conditions in the Hispanic community, including highly prevalent diseases like hypertension. Most studies on hypertension in Hispanics are done on Mexican-Americans (2-3) and very little data exists for other Hispanic subgroups. Puerto Ricans comprise the second largest Hispanic group in the United States (4) with 75% living in three states: New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Studies about hypertension in Puerto Ricans would be valuable in understanding and managing hypertension in these patients. In this review article, we attempt to summarize the available medical literature that focuses on hypertension in Puerto Ricans.
